Book ahead: every experience here runs limited sessions and sells out fast in peak season — book 2–3 weeks before you go.

Two different park passes: Uluru/Kata Tjuta uses the federal Parks Australia pass (3-day AUD$38, or an annual pass for AUD$50); Kings Canyon sits in a separate NT-run park (Watarrka) and needs its own NT Parks Visitor Pass (from $10/1-day, $20/3-day) — the two aren't interchangeable. Most guided tours don't include this pass — always double check, as only a few do. You may need to show proof of purchase before boarding (often an emailed confirmation). Self-drivers should also buy it online themselves in advance.

Only one place to stay — book early: all accommodation is within Ayers Rock Resort (Yulara), limited and pricey, and it tends to get more expensive the closer you book. To save a bit, consider a camping tour instead, or mix a few resort nights with a few camping nights. My full accommodation breakdown is here.

Want an aerial view? Just pick the right plane seat: you can often spot Uluru from the air just by choosing the right seat — no helicopter fee needed. Both sides can actually see Uluru, but the right side gives a clearer shot. Cloud cover can still block the view though.

Sun protection, layers, and a flexible mindset: sun protection is a must, and the day/night temperature swing is big — dress in layers you can add or remove. Outdoor experiences (camel rides, star dinners) can be adjusted or cancelled due to weather, so be mentally prepared if you get unlucky. Sunrise views also aren't guaranteed every day — I booked two different sunrise experiences to improve my odds.

Respect Anangu culture: Uluru is a sacred site — photography is prohibited in the Cultural Centre and some areas. These spots hold sacred stories (Tjukurpa) that, by tradition, are meant to be seen and told only by specific people in their original location; capturing and circulating images elsewhere is considered disrespectful to that knowledge, which is why photography is banned there — check signage before shooting.

Limited food options: the resort's supermarket (IGA) and restaurants are pricey with limited choice — bring snacks or instant noodles to save money. Notable restaurants:

• Bough House (Outback, native-ingredient dishes, plus camel, kangaroo, and emu sausages if you want to try something different)
• Walpa Lobby Bar (Sails, light bites)

• Outback Kiosk (Outback area, pizza and burgers)
• Ayers Wok (Town Square, noodle bar)

IGA also bakes fresh roast chicken three times a day — I picked mine up around 3pm and it was still nice and fresh.

Send a postcard from the Uluru post office: the stamps here make a great keepsake. Open weekdays 9:00am–5:00pm, Saturday half-day 9:00am–noon only, and closed Sunday — plan your visit around that.

Fly-net hats — buy before you arrive: they're $12.98 each ($20 for two) at the resort, but only $5.98 at Bunnings (an Australian hardware store) beforehand. I happened to visit in cooler weather with barely any flies and never ended up using mine — worth checking the season before deciding.

You probably don't need a rental car: the resort's free shuttle is genuinely convenient, and most tours include pickup/drop-off too (my accommodation guide has more shuttle details at the end). It's simple — just walk to your accommodation's entrance and wait; the driver stops at each property on a fixed schedule. Before boarding, check the destination display or route sign on the front or side of the bus to make sure it's headed where you're going. The accommodation-to-airport shuttle is timed to match your actual flight, so check with reception for the pickup time before you head out. If you want to explore Uluru/Kata Tjuta at your own pace, there's also the Hop On Hop Off bus (a fixed loop with set stops — you decide where to get off and how long to stay; 1-day passes from ~$140).

• Guided tour: you don't drive, and someone else handles food/rest stops — easier and more relaxed
• Self-drive: full flexibility to stop for photos and go at your own pace

There are rental desks right inside the terminal at Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) — mainly three: Avis (open Mon–Fri 9am–2pm, Sun 9am–1:45pm; cars must be returned within office hours), Hertz, and Thrifty (usually the cheapest after comparing rates). These three are also the companies Ayers Rock Resort's own site recommends — grab your keys after landing and drive straight to your accommodation.

• Download offline maps first (some stretches have zero signal)
• Pack enough water/snacks/breakfast yourself
• For longer drives like Kings Canyon, take turns driving if there's more than one of you

If this isn't just a Uluru trip but part of a bigger outback road trip, Alice Springs is about 450km / 4.5hrs from Uluru and sits right along the route — well worth adding. If you want to go further, Coober Pedy (the underground town) is roughly 8hrs away toward Adelaide — a much bigger undertaking, better suited to travellers with a week or more to spare.

Camel ride tips: skip the big bag — extra weight adds to what the camel has to carry. Staff hand out a small pouch (big enough for a water bottle) before you set off, which is really all you need. Each camel seats two — people who book together simply ride together; if you're an odd one out, you'll ride solo rather than being paired with a stranger. If you feel the cold easily, bring gloves — the handlebar is metal and gets icy to hold — and tissues help too, since cold mornings mean runny noses. After the sunrise ride, coffee, tea, and fresh bread with various spreads are served on site, so there's no need to worry about missing breakfast.

The red sand hides magnetite: the ground here has trace amounts of magnetite, which is strongly magnetic — hold a magnetic charging cable or magnet close to the ground and it really does pull out a few dark little grains. We tested it ourselves! The reddish surface, meanwhile, comes from iron oxide that's oxidised over time — and the same goes for Uluru itself: the rock is actually grey sandstone underneath, and what you see is just the rusted outer layer built up over millions of years. That's why Central Australia is nicknamed the "Red Centre" — and since the light angle keeps shifting through the day, the shade of red you see changes too, which is exactly why everyone camps out for sunrise and sunset.
